confused by CDN

Hi there,

Currenly I use a subdomain for WP uploaded files, for CDN activation (load Autoptimize files from a subdomain) I defined cdn.mysite.com pointing to Autoptimize default cache folder and as the guide says I put the address in the CDN field of Autoptimize setting. But an error occured with site loading, theme couldn’t load properly. I couldn’t solve the problem using below words from FAQ, please help.

How does CDN work?
Starting from version 1.7.0, CDN is activated upon entering the CDN blog root directory (e.g. http://cdn.example.net/wordpress/). If that URL is present, it will used for all Autoptimize-generated files (i.e. aggregated CSS and JS), includinng background-images in the CSS (when not using data-uri’s).

Hi John;
You don’t have to point to the default cache folder, just the CDN base URL is ok.

If e.g. you have http://www.mysite.com/ with an autoptimize file at
http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/cache/autoptimize/autoptimize_xyz.js, then in order to fetch the js from http://cdn.mysite.com/wp-content/cache/autoptimize/autoptimize_xyz.js, you just have to enter http://cdn.mysite.com/

So, no need to point the subdomain anywhere? Is it fully automatic? Is this a virtual parallel connection over http? How can I test if it’s working or not?

well, obviously cdn.mysite.com has (on a dns-level) to point to wherever your cdn is locate. if you did that and you enabled it in autoptimize, it will automatically change the URL for the JS and CSS to that domain, which will allow the browser to download more files simultaneously as they are on a different domain. you can test this using your browser’s development console (network view) or using e.g. http://www.webpagetest.org.

I just point the subdomain to nowhere and everything works fine; to test its impact I just pressed ctrl+u and wonderfully I saw many urls has been changed to the cdn.mysite.com.
