• I recently started a wordpress site and right away I started customizing the look and feel of the site.

I had a problem with my theme and it was suggested that I use a child theme to edit the issue.

When I installed the child theme many of my changes were gone.

Is there a way to get my settings back to what I edited on the parent theme with out starting over?

I have not edited any actual code or files just plugins and options so hopefully I can avaoid some of the pitfalls that other people have had due to editing files/code

I am a noob so simplicity will help

  • Hi there,

When you change to a different theme or a child theme — you lose most, if not all, the customization.

So you need to start over with the child-theme.

Ok that sucks but what about the files I have uploaded or image path ways will those need to be fixed? I am running buddy press and we had some test users. Will their files still be available?

Also how do I get the settings back from my plug ins? Deactivate then reactivate or delete and re-install?

The path to your images and plugins don’t change when you switch to a child theme. — It’s hard for me to visualize your situation. Try activating your plugins and then configuring them. Then try inserting an image from the media library.

I am going through everything now so I will let you know if that works for me. It seems like my plug ins retained their settings and all of my image files are still available. I will check on the uploads and user profile information next.

Thank you for your help kind stranger your are amazing!
