• Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and thank whoever addressed the drag and drop text issue which I raised in a previous thread.

However, I don’t know if this affects other people but I regret to say that the issue hasn’t really gone away, it’s just morphed into another problem.

Now, I cannot drag and drop text from one page to the text editor whilst in Visual mode – only in Text mode, meaning that if, as is normally the case, I am working in Visual mode, in order that I have some idea how the text is formatted, I must change to Text mode to drag and drop text and then back again to Visual mode to format it.

I’m not really sure which causes the greater inconvenience, the lack of drag and drop; forcing copy and paste or drag and drop only in text mode forcing the need to change modes twice.

Incidentally, I accidentally discovered that this did not happen when dragging and dropping text from Safari to Firefox but having to do this for every post would, in my case, be (a^2 + b^2)^2 in terms of inconvenience.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

I deactivated all plugins – problem remained.

I switched to the default theme – problem remained.

I reset the plugins folder as per instructions – problem remained.

I cannot think how I can carry out the last procedure as my WP installation was done via cPanel X and Softaculous but trying to improvise would cause too much disruption to my site and I would wager that it would not resolve the problem.

There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your site’s content is all stored in your database – with the exception of uploaded media files stored in the wp-content folder. So as long as you avoid that folder, you will be fine. All you are doing is uploading a fresh set of WordPress core files using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

Maybe but I am just wondering why my installation is suspected when an issue which was introduced in 3.9.0 seems to have left a residual bug when it was fixed in 3.9.1.

I didn’t have either problem three weeks ago!

when an issue which was introduced in 3.9.0 seems to have left a residual bug when it was fixed in 3.9.1.

Because this issue is specific to your site.

    (@zumatra)

And how do you know that, exactly? Sounds a bit presumptuous to me.

Anyway, you are wrong because I have two WP sites one of which is virtually vanilla (and is only a couple of weeks old) on a completely different server to my main site and I just tried drag and drop text on there and it has the same problem.

And how do you know that, exactly?

Experience gained assisting in over 90,000 support topics on these forums.

    Thread Starter Zumatra

    (@zumatra)

    But you were still wrong.

No. It’s specific to your sites. There have been millions of 3.9.1 updates. Do you see millions of topics here with the same issues as you? I don’t. But then, if you think that I cannot help you, I won’t trouble you any further.

Good luck with your sites. I do hope you manage to resolve the issues soon.

    Thread Starter Zumatra

    (@zumatra)

    Huh!

So, it occurs on two sites, one of which is a near virgin vanilla installation on a completely different server and you insist that it is a problem on the first one of my sites?

No, I don’t see millions of topics on this issue; why? Because a) there were not millions of people who reported the initial drag and drop problem, only those who used drag and drop text on a regular basis and b) WP 3.9.1 was only released a day or so ago, maybe other users haven’t updated yet or experience the problem.

But I would like to add as a final note that I didn’t ask you or anybody else for support. I posted this thread in Requests and Feedback – as I did with my original thread on the topic; here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/please-allow-the-new-media-feature-in-39-to-be-disabled – but somebody moved it to another section. I was merely trying to be helpful by pointing out a possible bug.

There is no such bug in WordPress 3.9.1. Now are you willing to go through the other steps so that we can try and resolve the issue on your sites?

    Thread Starter Zumatra

    (@zumatra)

    No thanks.

    I can’t wait…

    Thread Starter Zumatra

    (@zumatra)

To satisfy myself, I installed a fresh version of WP on a completely different site with no plugins or any add-ons or themes – straight out of the box. I tried to make a new post and drag text from one Safari page to another and it would not do it.

I am satisfied that there is nothing wrong with any of my installations and that there is a bug in WP 3.9.1 which was introduced when fixing the reported drag and drop problem.

Now, will you move this thread back to the Requests and Feedback section where I originally posted it, please.

FWIW – the problem only occurs in Safari (on a Mac – even with all Safari plugins etc. disabled), as far as I can tell.

Certainly – once we have completed all of the troubleshooting steps. For example, did you try adding define('SCRIPT_DEBUG', true);to the bottom of your wp-config.php file (just before the require_once line)?
