• Hi there,

I recently created a XML backup of my WordPress content. After that, I deleted all the content (for some testing purposes ^^) and tried to reimport my XML file. As the database was not really empty (and due to some other reasons), articles and pages werde created, but with annother ID.

Normally, I use ‘pretty’ permalinks with the form %postname%. Perhaps, some foreign blogs will link to the ugly version with ‘?p=123’ (now dead). Any ideas, what to do? Or is ther sth. else that I have to keep in mind. If there are too many bad news, I would think about using a real SQL dump (not that piece of XML ^^).

    Best Regards!

Post ID’s are not preserved on an Export/Import operation. If you want to preserve them, you need to use a database dump and restore.

But other than old p=whatever links not working, there’s really very little consequence to it. If you use pretty permalinks, they’ll stay the same. If you use post/page ID’s directly in your theme, you’ll need to edit the theme to reflect the changes.
