My issue is that “plugins” isn’t listed on the menu on the dashboard.
I saw where it was supposed to be under “Appearance” but on mine, it is “users” instead. Do I have to upgrade from the free version in order to use a plugin?

The slideshow plugin is a free plugin, there’s no paid version. If you have installed and activated the slideshow plugin, but you’re not seeing it in your WordPress dashboard menu, something has probably gone wrong while installing the plugin’s user permissions.
You should be able to fix this by installing the Members plugin by Justin Tadlock.
After installing and activating the Members plugin you’ll see a “Roles” menu in the “Users” menu of the WordPress dashboard. Click the “Roles” menu and choose “Administrator”, or a different role if you’re not the administrator of the website. You’ll see a list of permissions, which should contain some permissions that start with “slideshow-jquery-image-gallery”. Enable all of these by checking the checkbox in front of them.
Update the roll and see if you can see the slideshow menu now.

Upload members to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory.
Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
I don’t know how to access the wp-content/plugins/directory.
Since I don’t know how to activate the plugin in the first place, I think I’m just going to give up – this is going in circles.
