• As of last week (might be a WordPress upgrade, might be an API or Chrome change) the fonts changed by this plug-in no longer show up on the Home page until moused over or the page has been reloaded for the Chrome browser.

Manually adding the standard code from the Google Fonts page to your header.php does not work, nor does adding the standard code to your header work without this plug-in installed, leaving me to believe this is where things go wrong.

Adding the javascript code from the Google Fonts page to your header does work, and provides a temporary workaround.

Anyone have any deeper knowledge or a neater solution?

  • I noticed something a bit weird on my site earlier last month, but it seems to have resolved itself now. And then a couple of days ago I did read that there are a couple of bugs in Chrome – here we go –

Chrome bug affecting web fonts – February 4, 2014

Chrome having issues displaying fonts (replaces with Helvetica Neue)

    Chrome bug affecting web fonts

I’ve just received reports from a remote user that at least one of my pages is showing no text at all (images are displayed correctly and seem to be positioned OK). He is using Chrome on a Windows PC.

I’ve tried to recreate the problem at my end (various browsers & devices) but without success.

Googling for this issue I can only find this which sounds similar but is for a completely different plugin – http://wordpress.org/support/topic/google-fonts-are-not-loading?replies=6
Sounds like it *might* be some sort of caching error, but that fix isn’t applicable to this plugin anyway.

I see this plugin has not been updated for a while, and there’s not been any signs of the author in this support forum for some time. I just noticed too that the link from the plugin admin panel to the author’s own site takes you to a 404.

So I’m sad to say that it might be time to jump ship.

This plugin has been updated recently and seems better supported –
    Easy Google Fonts – http://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-google-fonts/

(I’m surprised that Google Font plugins haven’t really taken off, although I guess that many WP themes actually include this functionality builtin nowadays).

I’ve been using Google fonts Open Sans manually using @import, and recently noticed the text was not displaying in Chrome unless I viewed the page source or inspected said element – then it would magically appear. I tried this plugin to see if made a difference, but got the same results. Seems the problem lies not with this plugin, but with Chrome. This workaround seems to work, for now.
