WP update makes wp-config point to wrong database???

i recently migrated a WP site and am now experiencing a problem—when i update to a new version of wordpress, (3.8.1) my site disappears. it seems that the update changes my wp-config file to point to the wrong database.

can you help me understand what’s causing this, and how to repair it? i appreciate your help.
