I should mention I have set the wp-content dir to 755, tried smaller files and single word names but still have no idea as to what the problem is.

Hi, having same issue whatever file name and/or file size. Even with gallery directory set to 775. Just a yellow triangle whitout any error explaintation.
Any help would be appreciated
Did not find any solution, rollback to NextGen 1.9.13

For now I found another Gallery plugin
I’ve had this problem for months now and I’ve tried most if not all the advice and I still cannot upload images without the image files being broken.
I have the same issue occasionally. It seems to be related to the thumbs. I tried creating a thumb 100x75px 72dpi names thumbs_<file name>.jpg and uploaded it using FTP to the thumbs folder in the gallery. After that I went to the gallery and did an import metadata on the failing image. This resolved the problem.
