    Hi,

I’m used to build directly a WP site and use this plugin to keep it private until it’s ready to go public. I do that in order to work online with the client. It suits me more than working on a dev copy and moving the site once it’s done.

My question is if this practice has any consequences on SEO… Do you know how Google behave with a site which is private for weeks and then suddenly appear public ? As I use from the start the final domain name, I wonder if keeping the site private could hurt its SEO rank later on.

    Hope I was clear enough.

Thanks a lot for your comments.

  • I’m afraid I don’t know much about SEO. Logically, though, since search engines won’t be able to “see” and therefore won’t be able to index your site — like visitors, the plugin blocks search engines, too — it is as if your site never existed until you turn off the private site plugin.

To avoid any unknown chance of an unknown penalty, I would recommend that you set “Search Engine Visibility” in Admin Settings-Reading to Discourage when Private Site is turned on. That would avoid “confusing” search engines.

If you want to dig into this topic further, I would suggest finding a good SEO forum — need not have anything to do with WordPress — and ask your question in less specific terms there. “If I block access to all my web site pages until my site goes live, will it hurt my SEO rating?”
