Support » Themes and Templates » Where is my directory

  • Not that new to wordpress – still cant get anything i want done .

I am supposedly supposed to make a child theme if i want to change my page.

The first thing the child theme guide on WP talks about is creating a new directory – I have never seen a ‘directory’ anywhere ever.

This is really annoying – i just want to change my main page and i would even do it using my own html but i can’t do that either.

Someone help without any of the dumb lingo? please. Thanks.

create it inyour wp-content folder as follows:

    /wp-content/themes/your-child-theme/

    Thanks Tara.

Can i get a bit more clarification maybe, on where these directories are located.

Is it on my computer? I have a folder on my desktop since downloading it, says wordpress, full of files that make me just ‘x’ it out cause i dont know what they do.

Or is it on the net?

I paid for hosting thru hostgator and uploaded WP onto it. But i dont like the way that we have to use a ‘theme’ that can barely be edited.. Lacks creativity IMO – they are great for just an average blog post, but not for a front page.

I know theres a way i can just HTML it amd use WP for the menus and regular posts, right?

Talk to your hosting providers to find where your directories are – it won’t be on your computer but a server.

Thanks much for the response andrew.

So this folder on my desktop can theoretically be deleted (or does the filezilla program require this?)

Theoretically you can delete any folder on your desktop and that doesn’t require FTP (unless you’re accessing it remotely).

    Ha- sarcasm is great 🙂

My epiphany is that i downloaded WP and the folder was there just to upload on to hostgator and now it doesnt have a use . Ok .

Now in regards to creating a page on hostgator thru straight html, and using wordpress as the format for all of my posts.. Can we talk about that here? Can someone shed some light on how i can go about this?

I was creating html pages as a 13yo on expage .com… I now did all the paying to host my own site and its a whole different, more complicated galaxy… 🙁

Sorry if that sounded sarcastic, I was trying to reinforce that files on your computer don’t represent files on your website.

We can’t talk about how to create files because that’s hosting territory, but we can talk about how to use WordPress for the format of your posts. Which theme are you using? http://whatwpthemeisthat.com

    Ah gotcha, thanks man.

    I was/am using Customizr ,

but the very first problem I ran in to was getting my banner centered, and the menus bar under the banner.

My site is christheexplorer.net if you were up this morning and wanted to take a look.

I tried a little CSS (Customizr has a box that allows you to add CSS) , I took a portion of code from someone else’s post about centering a logo on these forums. The CSS didn’t work though.

Could you create a thread on the Customizr subforum: http://wordpress.org/support/theme/customizr#postform ? That way you’ll be more visible to the right people and are more likely to receive accurate support
