Support » Fixing WordPress » SOLVED (?) login and blank screen on login problem

  • I stamped my foot Sunday night and ran off in a huff. I was tired and disgusted and there didn’t seem to be a solution to the myriad problems that seemed to appear, one after the other on my site Saturday.
It started with (so I thought) upgrading from Wuh-Wuh to 1.2.1. And then after being in and out of the “new” install setting up skins and plugins, suddenly getting the prompt “password field is empty” and progressed to being able to login, but getting a blank screen thereafter. Or sometimes I’d get a screen with just this text:
I was literally locked out of my site completely. I tried reinstalling WordPress, downgrading back to Wuh-Wuh, everything I could think of. The fact that my other installs (two 1.2 testbeds and a 1.3 testbed all at different domains) seemed unaffected was also troubling.
Then the problem began appearing on one of my testbed domains when I decided to install a backup of this blog there (the backup of course including all my files, including plugins, that I had installed at the original blog site). I chatted with my web host and they couldn’t figure out why I kept getting the blank screen. I went backward and forward, line by line, over the wp-login.php file which seemed to be the root of the problem.
Only when I did an install of 1.2 from my CPanel Fantastico installer and began, one by one, bringing my plugins in, did I find the culprit. When I removed that plugin file, everything worked fine. When I added it back in, I was able to recreate the blank login screen and weird glyph errors.
The file in question is called wp-player-plugin.php and is described as follows:
    Plugin Name: WordPress Media Playser
    Plugin URI: http://zonble.twbbs.org
    Author: Weichung Yang
Description: You have a WordPress blog, and you may like to share your audio clips such as MP3 files on the Internet, and you may announce that you have written a new song and upload this file to your own blog. This plugin can help you to management the audio clips on your WP blog, you can insert a link or embed the file to your blog entries easily, it also offer a web-based player to play all your audio clips.
The original file had this “” at the beginning of the file. When I edited it out, everything settled back down again. This was the last plugin I added after I upgraded from Wuh-Wuh. It never dawned on me that this plugin — rather the glitch that was contained in it — would so catastrophically affect the entire site.
