After exporting from the original site and importing into the new site, all widgets were successfully imported and showed up in the website, but the widget admin screen was rendered unusable. All the “dynamic” elements such as clicking on sidebars and widgets to expand & collapse, or hovering over the left menu to reveal options, did not work anymore. I could do nothing in that screen anymore.

I have two plugins that do stuff in the widget admin screen: Polylang (adds a language selector to each widget) and Slim Jetpack (adds a visibility selector to each widget).

I couldn’t find any way to make it work, so I had to delete the widgets directly in the database.

    Hi David,

Do you see any JavaScript errors? If you’re using Chrome, go to View > Developer > JavaScript console.

Try deactivating all plugins in case there is a conflict. If the problem goes away while all plugins are inactive, then reactivate them one by one to determine which is causing the problem.

Apparently the problem was caused by Social Media Widget (http://wordpress.org/plugins/social-media-widget/). The screen was usable after disabling it. Then I removed every widget, enabled all plugins except that one, imported widgets again without problem, disabled Widget Import & Export, and enabled Social Media Widget. All worked perfectly.

I’m glad you have it working now. Thank you for sharing what worked for you.
