• Hi there,

    I have been using NextGen on a site I’m buliding. I am using a slideshow on my front page, and I’ve made the order of images random by using this shortcode in the page itself:

    [slideshow id=1 order_by="rand()"]

    It had been working fine, but when I updated the plugin yesterday, the randomness seems to have disappeared. Can anyone guide me on how to restore it?

    Thanks!

    @jsmallernst – I just checked that exact shortcode you are using and I am seeing a random view of the gallery … is it possible another update may be affecting this; or, maybe your browser cache needs to be cleared for you to see the random display?

    A link to the gallery may help but without knowing what the “real” order of the images is we may not be able to tell immediately if your slide show is being displayed randomly or not.

    Thanks for your reply! Here’s a link to the page:

    I cleared my cache and it’s strange. It used to be that every time I refreshed the page, I would get a true random order–a different starting image, a different sequence. But now it seems periodically the order changes, but I will refresh several times in a row and the starting image is the same several times in a row. Can you help?

    Thanks!

    And please let me know if there is other information I can provide for you to help troubleshoot this problem! I’d love to restore the random order to this slideshow.

    Hi again,

    Sorry to pester, but does anyone have any insight into this issue?

    Thank you!

    @jsmallernst – As I noted, I was not seeing the same issue I can now see on your site testing the same shortcode you are using. Did you check if there was a conflict with another plugin?

    Did you try the current version of the shortcode to see if that will work, see this page: http://www.nextgen-gallery.com/nextgen-gallery-shortcodes/

    PS: Sorry for the delay in responding.

    Thanks for your reply! No apologies necessary.

    So I’ve replaced the shortcode I was using with this:

    [ngg_images source="random" display_type="photocrati-nextgen_basic_slideshow"]

    At first, it seemed to be working!

    However, now I’m experiencing the same problem: every time I refresh the page, or navigate back to the main page from other pages, I get the same starting image. Argh! Any other ideas why this might be happening? This random functionality is of utmost importance to the client, so I’d love to be able to get it back (the way it was pre-update). I feel like i must be very close to solving this…

    Thanks again so much!

    @jsmallernst – Would you happen to have any caching plugins installed … or caching done via the web host / server environment?

    Otherwise, we may need to get a closer look at what is going on with your specific site. Would you be able to submit a Bug Report (http://www.nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/ … please reference this topic) so we can. We will need log in and FTP credentials for the WordPress installation as well, just include those with the Bug Report.

    Thanks!

    Hi

    Was this issue ever resolved? I am experiencing a similar problem. “Random” pictures repeat on reloading the page AND in different browsers. Strange. I wonder if there’s something that needs to be cleared every time the page loads?

    The code I am using on my front page (www.brianbermanphoto.com) is:

    [ngg_images tag_ids=”front” order_by=”rand()” display_type=”photocrati-nextgen_basic_singlepic”]

    It’s basically supposed to select a random image from all images with the tag “Front” on it.

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Brian
