I was having problems with the 2.7 truncating my menu names when English was selected, so I downgraded to 2.6. Now I am unable to edit the settings. When I press “save changes” I get a screen asking “Are you sure you want to do this?” which I cannot click out of.

Is there a way to completely uninstall the plugin to “reset” the setting?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

Yes. Go to the WordPress Dashboard>Plugins>Installed Plugins>Google Language Translator and select “Deactivate” and then select “Delete”.

Did you delete version 2.7 before installing version 2.6?

You should only have one version “active” at a time.

    Hope this helps.

I did deactivate/delete 2.7 before installing 2.6 as you mentioned. I know that some plugins do not completely delete. I believe that is the case with this plugin as when I reinstall the plugin all of my previous setting come along with the install. In this case, I had de-selected certain language options, selected a horizontal layout, etc.

So is there a way to completely uninstall to where the settings are reset to their default values? If not, would installing the “pro” version of the plugin resolve the issue?

    Thank you!!

    Rob,
Just to be clear, the problem was not resolved with the solution suggested.

    Thank you.

mrjocko, thanks for the quick reply.

Settings are not fully deleted when de-activating this plugin, which is fairly common for many plugins to leave their settings there. This may change in the future with this plugin, just to make things more clean. Although users would need to setup the plugin again, which is sometimes more a hassle than leaving settings there for next time.

As for this plugin, it sounds like re-installing just one version should solve your issue. You should be able to access the settings panel, and then update the settings to what you want, if only one plugin is installed.

Are you still having problems? If so, let me know and I will help.

    Thanks Rob,

No luck. Having deactivated and deleted then reinstalling didn’t change the settings error. Btw, it’s only happens with your plugin (not with all settings) and it only started happening after deleting the 2.7 to downgrade this morning. Can you tell me how to delete the setting options. Totally understand why you leave them, but I believe the issue might derive from those lines of code. Thoughts?

    Thank you,
    Jack

    Hi Guys,

Would deleting the …>wp-content>plugins>”google-language-translator” folder remove everything, including the saved settings?

If not, where do plugins generally store their setting.

Hi mrjocko, there are no lines of code that when changed, would solve this specific error, but I’m not 100% sure of that at this point.

I’ve searched this out on the Internet, and some people using other plugins have found that manually uploading the plugin via FTP solves the issue.

But if you want to manually delete the settings, you need to go inside the database, which is where the settings are added.

I would need to see your site admin to get a better idea of what is happening here. You are the first one to present this error in the history of the plugin.

Let me know if I can help.

    Rob

    That answers my question, thanks!

    Hi Rob,

I stripped the shortcode from my header.php, then reinstalled using FTP. I now am able to work with the settings like expected. However, like using 2.7, if I translate into another language and back to English, the text on the site gets truncated.

    Here is the site: http://essexpublicschool.com/about/

Due to our neighborhood being very multicultural, the ability to translate is a must have.

I’m willing to purchase the pro version of the plugin. Do you know if the truncation happens with it too?

    Thanks!!

Great! So here’s what you can do, just to make this work for you quickly. Go and download version 2.6, and then upload via FTP as you just did with 2.7.

The only difference will be the flag styles, and the multilanguage issue we had in version 2.7 will not be there. It should not translate oddly if you do that.

Let me know if it works.

    Hi Rob,

Unfortunately, the problem still exists when using 2.6. I wasn’t sure if it was a problem of where I was placing the shortcode in the header.php. So I moved the shortcode to the top of a page. No luck. The problem still persists.

Here is what I have discovered. The website is in English. When I use google language translator to translate into another language, everything functions as expect. However, if I return the drop-down menu to English, all of my text gets messed up. Specifically all of the menu items and words get truncated to only the first letter of each word or sentence. Now, if I choose Afrikaan…everything is translated to English and we’re right as rain again.

    To diagram:
English —> Other Language [all is ok] —> English [everything messed up] —> Afrikaans [translates to English, not Afrikaans, and everything seems reset/ok]

You can see it play out on my website: essexpublicschool.com/about/

My other thought was that the plugin might be conflicting with the theme (responsive pro).

Thank you for your time. It’s truly appreciated!

    Jack

I see this problem now, mrjocko. Thank you.

There is text on your website causing this – I’m not sure yet what it is, but we can try some things. When Google doesn’t understand text, it won’t translate properly.

The mis-translations start on your 2nd menu item. Try removing the “front slash” (/) from your 2nd navigation item (i.e. Faculty/Staff). Let’s start there. Make the menu item “Faculty Staff” without the slash for now.

Keep in mind that this might take some back and forth between us to find this issue, although I’m confident that is what is happening here.

    Thanks!

Hi Jack, let’s also navigate to Settings > Site Title, and please remove “Essex Public School”. The Site Title field should be completely blank when trying this. I have found the site title to cause translation problems in the past on certain sites.

And we can just add the site title back after we test this, it’s only a test at this point.

Let me know how it goes.

    Hi Guys,

Maybe try changing a setting. Save the configuration. Change the setting back. Save the configuration. Do this for each setting (or in groups,). My thought being that some 2.7 setting may be lingering in the database.

You might also try disabling your other plugins one by one. Checking the translator after each plugin has been disabled. It might be a conflict with another plugin.
