Adding Next Gen Gallery to page – drop down list not working

    The drop down list on the popup for inserting a gallery is not working, No pointer on mouseover and no drop downlist.
    Admin>gallery>overview>plugin check says ‘Test failed, disable other plugins & switch to default theme’, well I’ve done that,disabled all other plugins and changed to default theme, and it still says it fails.
    Judging by the number of topicson this in this forum it seems to be a recurring problem for NGG and I’ve tried all the solutions in those topics and none work.
    Can anyone help please, my client is extremely unhappy!!!
    I’m running WP3.6.1 and NGG 1.9.6. (tried updating NGG to 2+ and css fell to bits so I’m not going there).
