Support » Fixing WordPress » excesive bandwith in wordpress 2.5

  • when i first installed wordpress (2.2 version) it was consuming a high bandwith (about 2 Gb per day)

i checked WordPress should compress articles (gzip) if browsers ask for them and it decreased to 1GB

since i have installed 2.5 version it has growth to 2 GB again

GZip option does not appear in 2.5 version, anyway i have checked database and it seems to be enable (set to 1 in gzipcompression) but not working, cos my bandwith is very high

anyone know what did happen in this new version?

  • I can’t help you with the exact wording or links but i read yesterday that the gzip function was removed from 2.5 as it was little used (questionable) had reasonable code overheads and practically every server nowadays had some form of server side compression built in! Cpanel included (which is the one i use).
I haven’t investigated this yet but other than checking with your server setup for that it might be an idea to look through your logs to see exactly what is eating up that much bandwidth t osee if there is any obvious way you can save data usage that way

in DirectAdmin i have no options for this side-server compresion

anyone knows if any wordpress plug-in does the same as gzipcompression option?

um i don’t know if these would help but there is a couple of cache modules – ultra cache and super cache which might help lower data usagge

    thanks for your responses

this seems to be useful for cpu usage, not for bandwith saving

dont know why compression code was removed from this version, may i should downgrade
