• Hi – my wordpress was hacked recently, and I am in the process of getting my pages back to my website – here I will document my progress so far and state how I now need assistance.

My host quarantined the public-html folder and created a new folder to work from.

I installed the new version of WP as normal to this directory.

I reconnected the mysql database to the new install, bringing back post content, pages, and portfolio items in my DASHBOARD ONLY. By this I mean, while I can view the pages/posts/portfolio items in the dash, I get a 404 error when typing in the URL of said pages – any URL besides the homepage, which works. (It looks broken since I haven’t yet uploaded the pictures back to the site).

    For instance :

    http://www.ilovevegan.com (works)
http://www.ilovevegan.com/recipes (404 error, but I had this already in the site)

At this point, the only thing I know how to do is reupload the pictures via FTP, but not which files to move or edit from the other 2 folders in that directory. What other files do I need to move from the old install via FTP? If it matters, my wordpress install that was hacked was running the previous version of wordpress, but the new install is now running the updated, current version of wordpress.

Any advice on how I should proceed is appreciated. Thank you!

  • The 404 error is caused by your permalink settings. Go to Dashboard –> Settings –> Permalinks and save.

What are the other two folders? They’re probably not vital but they could be backup directories etc etc.

Lastly, I know you bumped due to a lack of response so far, but bumping isn’t allowed here.
