Slimming WP down

Fellow Web Developers!
Is there a way to slim WP down? I am running WP and NGG, and my clients access WP overseas and upload from there. Often the internet is running extremely slow and WP is even slower than other sites. Is there anyway they can post and add pics, but without the massive loading times? Can I slim down WP and help them along?
