Import from WP XML file fails

    I exported the content of a wordpress.com-hosted site to XML. I’m trying to import it to a self-hosted site where I’ve installed wordpress 3.6. The XML file is small (154 kB), so I’m not running into the file-too-large problem. When I run the importer, I see a screen that says “Import WordPress”, and then nothing happens.

    What is going wrong, and how can I further debug this?
