adjusting size of uploaded photos

When I upload photos into a gallery, there is no option to choose different sizes of the image file. I am starting with very large hi-rez photos, and the result is that the uploaded photos slow the site down to a crawl on refresh and clicking on the photos themselves. In other themes I am given an option when uploading, I can’t seem to find any preferences for that in this theme.
