I know what I did wrong when coding and I also get the error msg when trying to reach my webpage but I just receive the error msg.

How do I access my webpage? I changed a line in function.php and happened to press update before I saw the mistake and now I can not fix my code.

    Pls. help anyone?

  • Try downloading a new installation set of files and upload the fresh function.php file.

Rename the old one first so you can switch back to it if this doesn’t work.

    Hi Ekehed,

Could you please let us know what error message you are seeing?

What functions.php did you edit? The one within your themes folder?

    Kind regards
    Jamie

Hm, I am all new to this. How do I rename the old one when I cannot access anything?

Thank you for your help, really appreciate it.

    I am receiving this:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘*’ in /home/ulrichth/public_html/wp-content/themes/grisaille/functions.php on line 66

I forgot to remove the “*”. But now I cannot access the file to remove it?

    Try this:

    1. Using FTP or whatever filemanagement tools your host has provided you with navigate to the wp-content/themes directory.
    2. Once there locate and make a backup copy the grisaille directory onto your PC or Mac. This is in case you want to preserve what changes you’ve made*.
    3. Once that’s done delete the grisaille directory. Just that one directory and nothing else.
    4. Try and re-login to your WordPress dashboard.
    5. Visit the Appearance menu on the left and you should get a message about the theme being missing and switching to the Twenty Thirteen theme.

Once that’s done you should be able to re-upload a fresh unedited copy of that Grisaille theme.

*Note: You really should not be modifying that theme’s file directly. Instead consider creating a child theme instead. It’s safer.

Hi Jan, and thank you for your help. I do not actually have the content on my mac, it is on the webhosts server. So I can not really access them. I think? Sorry, I am new to all this.

And I will for sure not modify these files again. I even copied the content to make sure I had it as it was. But no help when I cannot reach the code!

As Jan suggested about, you need to use FTP (or similar). If you’re not sure how to do this, ask your hosts for assistance.

Thank you Jan and esmi. I will contact my host and see how I make this work.
