Hello, i would like to use a different maintenance mode plugin instead of BPS’s maintenance mode.
I dont think the other maintenance mode plugin will be able to write to the hta file right?
im wondering if i should unlock it first then attempt to put my website in maintenance mode using a different plugin.

If the maintenance mode plugin is using .htaccess code then yes you would unlock the root .htaccess file to allow that plugin to write to the root .htaccess file. If the maintenance mode is not using .htaccess code then nothing would need to be done.

In a later version of BPS we will be redesigning BPS Maintenance Mode and it will not be using .htaccess code/files any longer to put the site into Maintenance Mode.

New Maintenance Mode under development for a future version of BPS.
