I’m not even actually sure if this is due to updating to WP 3.6. I just assumed it was. Here are some things that I have recently done (for other clues to the issue):
1. Updated to 3.6
2. Updated to your latest version of plugin
3. Added the redirect script your gave me (tweaked BuddyDev) — I removed this, but problem goes on
4. Disabled and enabled registration — my site’s registration form contains the PHP that calls your modal login window. I also purged site’s cache through WP Engine’s dashboard tab.
It might still be some sort of JavaScript/AJAX issue that is specific to me, so I would be fine with sending you an email with temporary admin credentials, FTP credentials, and login information. I also would need to send URLs via email, because site is in development and don’t want many impressions.
Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for posting three messages before a response, but I had to add more information — I went on your GitHub repository and downloaded the older version of the plugin (2.0.5.2) and it was no use.

I know how much work you have, outside of WordPress.org forums and that you don’t make money here, but this is an issue that (after looking through support forum) many people are facing. It would really be appreciated. Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I know that’s a bit contradictory given the other advice (and I apologize for that) but please one problem per plugin.
@therandomguy12345 SOrry to hear you’re having issues. I have this plugin installed in multiple virtualboxes and all instances are working for me.
If downloading a previous hits the same issue, there is a 3rd party issue at play here. I’m sure you did these steps already but I’ll just reiterate here as this should get help answer some things:
- Have you disabled all plugins and the issue continues?
- Have your (temporally) switched your theme to a default?
- If you have made any customizations to the plugin code, and then updated, your code will be lost and replaced with the newest version of the plugin.
I can definitely say it’s not an issue with the plugin and 3.6. Since I started working on this plugin I’ve been building it on WordPress’ trunk which was all 3.6. And even right now it’s working for 3.7 alpha. I also have back versions installed and still able to get logins working.
I haven’t touched any of the login stuff for a little while so I’m having a hard time seeing how this is ’caused by this plugin. Although, I’m not completely ruling it out.
I’m having the same problem too… and I narrowed it down to S2Member as the culprit.
I’m trying to log in with a non-admin user and with S2Member on, it just gets stuck at the Checking Credentials screen… If I deactivate S2Member, it succeeds.
This is the best looking modal plugin out there for wordpress, so I Reallllly hope someone can figure out a solution for this. =(

Might be something to do with User Role Editor, because I have a custom user role setup. I’ll try resetting user roles/permissions and seeing if that has any effect. Otherwise, will you be able to use admin & FTP credentials that I can send via email to diagnose the issue? Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!

Rather than again asking the plugin author to directly access your site via FTP, how far did you get with this clue from the plugin author…?
I’m sure you did these steps already but I’ll just reiterate here as this should get help answer some things:

I think you really need to let the plugin author know here how that went before you leap to asking them to do that FTP part.

By the way, I did follow your instructions, but didn’t remove a certain plugin, because it had rewrite rules set in host configuration associated with it, because that could crash my site. Since no plugins seemed to fix this, I decided to take a look at the security plugin and found a setting that has FIXED THIS ISSUE! Yay! The plugin was marking WP Modal Login’s request as suspicious query.
Anyways, thanks! Issue is resolved.

Well, it apparently had nothing to do with my custom user roles (and I don’t use s2member), so this solution most likely won’t work for you.
In my case, I found that this issue was caused by a setting in BWPS (http://wordpress.org/plugins/better-wp-security/) that blocked suspcious queries. And since this involves user credentials, I wouldn’t blame the plugin for thinking it’s suspicious. Anyways, I just disabled this and all is well on my part of the equation.
This probably won’t help you, but it’s all I can say/do?

@stringbean98, I have just installed s2member and I get the same results. It appears s2member is conflicting with the plugin. I also found a number of undefined variables and some headers already sent messages the second I installed the plugin.
I’ll continue to dig into this, but I may suggest checking with the author of s2member.
Ok right after I finish that message, this is an issue with s2member. When the PHP is ran for the AJAX login, the PHP fails because of the issues I mentioned above. Your issue is with s2member not properly checking and correcting all notices/errors.

Thanks for your investigation. When I looked in my browser’s network pane, I noticed that although I wasn’t getting the ajax response back, I Was getting a redirect in the background. I suspected it was S2member’s redirect hooks that was short-circuiting the return for the ajax call. My solution was to implement an S2-hack to disable redirects, which did the trick. Everything is working smooth now. The hack is below:
