On my site I often feature guest posts. Sometimes a guest author is not familiar with WP and probably is not going to write more than one post. Nevertheless I like for their name to appear on the byline as the author.

When this happens I create a new user for them with the author role and place a checkmark where it says “create without sending a confirmation email” Then I write the post myself and select the “author” on the edit post page.

My question is whether there is a better method for doing this?

Does it create a security problem to have a lot of extra “users” who never log in.
