I’m at work now and we are spinning up a WordPress server. Anyhow, the clients want to have 2 WordPress sites (1 for external users and 1 for internal users).

The 2 sites need to be clones and they want this for security concerns. Is this even possible? Can I install 1 instance of WordPress with all the plugins and initial data, clone it and when a user updates 1 it automatically updates the other wp instance?

  • I am assuming these are two separate WordPress installations? Try using the same database settings for both installations.

Using the same database won’t work. That’s because the URL for the site (as well as a whole lot of internal links) are set in the database. This means that yes you can set two sites up to run form the same DB – but every link, image, etc, will use the URL for the first website.

I know that there are plugins that can duplicate the database between sites, but I’d really be asking the question of “why?”. I know that you say it’s for security, but that’s not a reason. If both sites run off the same database and either one gets hacked/changed/whatever then both sites will be affected. Ask what their exact security issues are, and let us know and I’m sure we’ll be able to tell them what really happens and what they should really be concerned about.
