Support » Fixing WordPress » No category base for a large website gives 404s

  • Hi everyone,

I’m out of ideas, hoping you can help me.

So I have a guitar tablature site with 50000 posts and 7000 categories. The posts are the tabs, and the categories are the artists.

Until the latest WP update (3.5.2), I’ve been using a plugin to remove the category base. With the last update, any plugin which would achieve this completely breaks the site.

Looking at the plugins and error logs, the no category base plugins use rewrite to alter the uri, but now, I just get a huge error log, and a broken site, where all pages and posts become a 404. In fact, if such a plugin is activated, going to wp-admin/posts doesn’t show any posts at all, you can’t change themes or deactivate plugins any more, so nothing works any more, I’m guessing due to the large number of rewrite occurring.

So I had no choice but to manually disable the plugin, by the way, I tried 4 and all of them exhibited the same error. As a result, the URL structure of my site has changed, which will probably get me banned from Google in a few days due to the large number of 404s.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to remove the category base again.
