Support » Fixing WordPress » 15+ second website load time

  • I have to optimize this wordpress website, and i have checked the network and performance results using the web tools. I noticed that some images take more than 3 seconds to load. The weird thing is that , for example, one specific file that is 400kb takes 11 seconds to load. Why?

I am quite aware that i will have to re-upload optimized versions of the pictures anyways, but if the problem exists for light files, what guarantees that the website load time will improve?

The “sintradentalclinic.pt” element in the network panel also takes a huge chunk of load time to finish… I don’t know the reasons for that one.

I’m very thankful in advance to any help you can give.

  • Hi @rodsn,

The website is extremely slow to load for me. The first time took over 20 seconds and further load times are still over 7 seconds.

What sort of hosting account is this running on? Often a huge speed boost can be achieved by using a hosting plan that provides greater server resources (more memory, CPU time etc) than many cheap share hosting accounts offer.

In addition to testing in different hosting environments you can use tools such as https://gtmetrix.com to give you feedback about what parts of the site can be optimized.

Use of caching plugins and caching services such as CloudFlare.com can also significantly increase load times.

A 400kb file should not take 11 seconds to load so I’d suggest that optimising images would be a secondary issue to the actual hosting account speed.

    Hi @rodsn,

Please run a Google PageSpeed test on your site. You’re getting a 0 score for mobile and 12 for DT (out of 100).

    Here are your top culprits.

    Eliminate render-blocking resources
    4.98 s
    Enable text compression
    2.28 s
    Reduce server response times (TTFB)
    2.12 s
    Remove unused CSS
    1.88 s
    Serve images in next-gen formats

Avoid enormous network payloads Total size was 27,797 KB

    My Observations

Try get all your image sizes below 100 KB. Any image around 200 KB should be rare and if it’s the only image on the page.

Your total site size is almost 28 MB. Try to get your page closer 1 MB or smaller.

Good points from @phillcoxon. It looks like you are on Claranet. They look reputable. Just make sure you are not on a shared hosting plan.

    Good luck!

Opps – just noted I said “Use of caching plugins and caching services such as CloudFlare.com can also significantly increase load times.” … when of course I meant that caching plugins can significantly increase page loading speed while decreasing overall load times.
