    I tried Author Image plugin but after I updated WordPress it did not work. I downloaded this plugin and could upload my own avatar. I like it very much it is very easy to use, could benefit from instant upload instead of pushing button but that is a small feature.

    Thank you for the comments. I thought about using Ajax to automatically upload the profile picture into the db but I wanted the script to be as lightweight as possible.
