• Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about setting up a multisite installation, but would like to find out if it would actually work before I try… 🙂

Let’s say my domain is example.com
My provider automatically maps subdomains for every directory that I put into my root, e.g. example.com/folder is accessible via folder.example.com and even http://www.folder.example.com. (I do not have access to any folders that are not accessible through a web browser.)

Currently, my blog lives here: example.com/christian
I also have a few folders/subdomains already set up, which I want to keep (i.e. not turn into WordPress powered sites).

Would it be possible to install WordPress Multisite in a way that my current blog stays where it is (i.e. can be accessed via christian.example.com) and new multisite blogs get set up with a pattern <name>.example.com (i.e. the new blogs’ files (if any) are stored in example.com/<name>), while leaving existing projects accessible (e.g. oldproject.example.com or example.com/oldproject)?

Would I have to move my current blog, or install an additional one?
Should I use the subdomain or directory setup?

That’s something you’ll need to tweak. You need folder.example.com to point to where example.com is installed, NOT it’s own subfolder. So … yeah be careful there. Most webhosts let you edit the subdomain mapping (that sounded like cpanel, so you should be able to tell it where to do).

To do what you want requires you to MAP domains. So install at home.example.com, make subsites like home.example.com/site2 and then use domain mapping on top of it to map site2.example.com to home.example.com/site2 – Should work

Thank you. Unfortunately, my provider uses a bespoke software, and customers can’t map anything themselves. Sounds like I’ll have to use single installations then…

Ask ’em 🙂 My company uses bespoke software, but we still have a way for you to do that. Maybe they’ll let you mirror the domains instead.
