Shortlinks for Custom Taxonomies?

Is it possible to create shortlinks automatically for custom taxonomies?

I am using the Pods Plugin (http://wordpress.org/plugins/pods/) and can set up a custom meta field for the bit.ly link on the taxonomies throughout my website. Could this plugin be edited to create custom shortlinks for them or could somebody point me in a direction for the best way to code that myself?
