• I just installed WordPress 2.3.1 and the visual editor is not working. I have already checked to make sure there is a checkmark under Users-Profile.

According to the documentation there is suppose to be a better wysiwyg editor. Why would this happen with a new install? This is frustrating. With the older versions of wordpress there was never a problem with the visual editor.
I’m at a loss to fix it.

  • What are you seeing? Can you give us some details please?

Do a search for “visual editor not working”. You will find in most instances it is a plugin or problems with htaccess.

This is a brand new install. I have no plugin uploaded yet. Regarding what I see, when I have it checked under User/Profile and I go to Manage/Pages there is nothing there. There are no tabs for the visual editor.

What would cause a problem in the htaccess file with a brand new install? I have read through the forums and it seems like this has been a common problem regarding the visual editor not working.

Do a search for visual editor not working.

What would cause a problem in the htaccess file with a brand new install? Ummm, I guess 58,278 things.

I have read through the forums and it seems like this has been a common problem. But it seems, sadly, there is no common solution.

Thanks, but this is not solving my problem. I’m trying to do a site for a customer and NOT having the visual editor is a pain. With this many complaints it seems to me that there is a problem with the new versions of WordPress. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!! I love wordpress, BUT with problems that there seems to be no answers too makes want to search for a new program that works.

I have looked for documention that the programers are aware of the problem and have found none. With all the other people having the same problem….something is wrong.

Below is a Screen Shot showing you what I see when the visual editor is checked under User-Profile. As seen in the screen shot there is nothing there.

It’s impossible for us to help you when you don’t give us any information that we need to help you. WordPress does not have this problem, your site has this problem. This is an important distinction to understand.

There’s a million reasons that you could see what you’re seeing. The best I can do is list some of them for you:
    – You failed to upload all the WordPress files. Specifically the files in the wp-includes/js directory.
    – Your .htaccess is interfering with the browser’s ability to get those files.
    – Bad server configuration.
    – Your browser has javascript disabled.

I mean, we don’t know, it could be anything. Narrow it down first. We cannot do your work for you. If you’re setting up websites for customers, then you should know how to fix this problem. You are a professional. Work it out. Use your head.

More to the point, ask us questions that we can answer. “Why is my site not working?” is not a question we can answer.

I have been using my head.

I have been using WordPress for a while.

    I’m very much a professional!!!

All files have been uploaded. My other option is to contact my web host.

I have thought this over and over.

So I guess everyone that is having a problem with the visual editor not working who is posting the same problem is also not a professional since they too are having the same problem? VERY unfair to attack my professional status.

I came to you for help, not to be yelled at that I’m not doing something right.

    I’m a designer and a professional! not a programer.

I will contact my web host, maybe they will be more adult in their response.

Sorry for turning this emotional post into a down-to-earth manner. May I please propose to WPLady that she try using Dean’s FCKEditor For WordPress (http://www.deanlee.cn/wordpress/fckeditor-for-wordpress-plugin/) – it’s simple and very much MS Word-like. Install it as a simple WP plugin – hope there’ll be no prob out there. Best of luck!

Sorry, but you’re the one yelling at this forum. We’re happy to help, but you have to ask us the right questions.

And YES, you’re not doing something right, because there’s nothing wrong with the visual editor in WordPress. It works. I cannot tell you why it’s not working for you, except to say that it not a WordPress problem. I can setup an instance of 2.3.1 on a test server in about 5 minutes and it works perfectly.

So I guess everyone that is having a problem with the visual editor not working who is posting the same problem is also not a professional since they too are having the same problem? VERY unfair to attack my professional status.

This doesn’t have anything to do with your ability. It has to do with your behavior. Your behavior and your words here are very unprofessional.

Also, when you say “My other option is to contact my web host”, that doesn’t give me a lot of confidence here. Any web designer should be able to solve this problem. It’s just javascript in a web page. How hard is that?

    I’m a designer and a professional! not a programer.

You don’t need to be a programmer to solve your problem. But you do need to know web design, web servers, javascript, and HTML. Knowing PHP would help, but it is not strictly necessary because, I guarantee you, this is not a PHP problem or a WordPress problem. It’s a site problem.

The visual editor does not run inside of WordPress, it runs inside of your browser. It’s javascript. Looking at the source of the page will tell you what javascript is being loaded. Trying to get that with your browser will tell you if it’s able to be retrieved. Looking at the browser’s error console will list any javascript related errors to look at.

In short, you have to solve the problem on the site, not just stamp your feet and shout “wordpress has a problem” over and over again.

We’re willing to help, if you’re willing to be helped.
