• Is there anything special I should know before I attempt to upgrade? Is it even possible? The only version available for download is 1.2.1 so I can’t take interim steps.

  • Backup your database 🙂
And yes, you should be fine. Do you have any hacks in use ? If so, you’ll be better off with plugins once upgraded.

Index.php has changed since 1.0.2 so you will need to use the new one and put any changes back into that. Using the old one could cause errors.

I tried to run upgrade.php and got the following error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: sanitize_title() in /[my directories]/wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php on line 560
Is that from something I did?

Did you first delete the old 1.0.2 files ?
What you could do is delete everything inside the /wp-admin folder, then re-upload.

I deleted everything (after backing up, natch) and uploaded the wp-admin folder and all its contents before I started and I just did it again, but I’m getting the same error.

Try deleting then re-uploading this file:
    wp-includes/functions-formatting.php

That didn’t work so I deleted everything and uploaded everything again and now I’m in business. Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it.
