Visual Editor not working in wp 3.5.1

I have just found the solution to a very frustrating issue I have been having with WP 3.5.1 and the visual editor and other icons not showing up in the page / post editor.

I use a mac with ML (10.8.3) with firefox 21.0 but also tested on Safari and Chrome – the visual editor did not show up when editing pages and posts. Also the kitchen sink icon did not show up so I did not have access to those additional icons. I was using a theme which included an additional icon to the theme shortcode manager and that wasn’t showing up either meaning that I was having to deconstruct the .php file to work out the shortcodes with their params before I could manually code them … very frustrating.

The theme developers (rascals labs) found the solution for me.

Turned out to be a quick fix on my Mac. I use VirusBarrier and their suggestion to adjust my preferences back to default fixed the problem on every one of my sites:

“How to: Open VirusBarrier X6 and click the word VirusBarrier in the top menu bar. Choose Preferences from the drop down menu and click the Advanced icon in the new window that appears. Now, please click ‘Revert to Default’ and enter your admin user password. Then, please close this window and test again.”
