How to Change Database Name, Username, and Password

Windows Server 2008 R2. IIS 7.0.

When I installed WordPress on my web server initially for the first WP web site, I was prompted for names for the MySQL database, database username, and password. I was able to make these whatever I liked. Subsequent installs for additional WP sites did not prompt me for this infomation, but set them for me to things like databse name “wordpress972,” username “wordpressuser972,” and a cryptic password. How can I change these after the fact?

You can export the database information and create a new database within your Cpanel. Just make sure to update your wp-config.php with the correct information.

Thanks for the reply. I do not know how to export, nor do I know what a Cpanel is. Can you clarify and provide some detail? Thanks.

The credentials (database / user / pass) are stored in wp-config.php in the site root

wp-config.php tells me what they are, but not how to change them.

Right – so you wish to:

1. Actually rename your database, and create a new user & pass
2. Point wordpress to this new set of credentials
?

Task 2 is done by changing the credentials in wp-config.php
Task 1 depends on your environment.

Ideally, you have some way to interact with mysql on your server?
Do you have a gui? / webpage?
Or do you SSH in?

I have no GUI for MySQL. Can you recommend one that would enable me to do as I describe?

As this is not directly related to WordPress, I suggest that you try asking on a forum dedicated to your server software.

A full-function GUI would be nice. I test installed WP a few times. So there are some junk databases that were created that I would like to delete, in addition to the other tasks mentioned above.

phpmyadmin is viewed as the standard.

I found the MySQL GUI Tools and MySQL Workbench and downloaded them. They appear to provide some of what I desire. They certainly make it so I am not so “blind” regarding what is going on behind the scenes in MySQL. I can query the tables, change usernames and passwords. But I am not sure how I could change a databases’ name (anybody know how?). I also do not see where I can open a table and change data within, like I can with the SQL Server Management Studio. Any thoughts?

Okay, I found the SQL Editor in the Workbench. it allows changing data within a table. So now I am left with how to change a database name???
