Two column layout for portfolio?

I’m trying to modify this plugin so that it uses two columns instead of one where the image of the portfolio item appears in the left column, then its title, date and view link is on the right. But when I try to make this into two columns, an empty item is created at the bottom.

I think this is happening because I’m separating the incrementing portion of the code from the rest of it in order to display the title and etc. on the right side. Is there any way I can get this to show in two columns instead of one without the empty item appearing at the bottom?
