Shortening excerpts?

    Hello everybody
    First of all I hope I posted this in the right forum. I think I did, since it´s a modification I am uncertain about.
    How can I make excerpts smaller? Not for the RSS, but for on the index etc. They are pretty long to my taste now and I´d like to know how to make them shorter. I am not PHP wizard though I know enough to fix it as soon as I have some more information about in what file it is and where, etc.

    Copy what you want to show in the excerpt field for the post then WP won’t have to “fake-it”, otherwise go into the excerpt function and change the size of the faked excerpt.

    In /wp-admin/options-writing.php chose “Show advanced control when writing”, or something like this : this will always show the excerpt field
