So why not get the API key for Akismet..? its free.. All you have to do is register when it says “Get your key here” or whatever it is in the Akismet options page.
And the thing you’re thinking of is Captcha where you enter a word before you can submit. Its built in to various antispam plugins. Like “Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam” amongst others.

Hi, I can’t control the spam comments I’ve been receiving to my site. I want to activate my AKISMET but I don’t have the API key. Do you have any suggestions on what anti-spam I need to use? Do you know those anti spam technique, like you need to write a certain word before you could submit a comment? What’s that?
