You can set up a second installation of WP at example.com/bimbo or whatever test-subdir name you like… BUT it has to have its own database or at least its own tables as described here:
Installing_Multiple_Blogs
Be aware: there is no “merger” between the two blogs.
Plain English: you will have a test blog with no posts to play with your design and whatever; and you will have the original blog with your posts.
All you can do: when done with testing – install your new theme and plugins etc. on the old blog.
I feel kind of stupid but I’ve read that over a couple times and feel like I’m missing something. So are you saying I can’t really set up multiple blogs, but instead can only test out different templates on my existing blog?
No that’s not what moshu is saying, you can have as many different blogs as your willing to admin. Did you read over the link that was given.
Be aware: there is no “merger” between the two blogs.
This means that you can’t have two separate blogs using the same data, you’ll just have one to test out a new design and plugins and what have you then you’ll just have to transfer them over to you old blog that’s already in place.
Well what if I want to start a completely new blog, with no archives or sign of the old blog?
Can I then just make some dummy posts and things for the new blog and then when I’m ready for the move, delete the old blog and make the new blog available on the root directory?
I’ve looked over that link and it’s helpful. I’m really just trying to figure out this unique situation with wanting to move the new blog from a test directory to the root directory and get rid of the old blog at the /wordpress/ directory.
So all your doing is starting a new blog then moving it to where your old blog resides now. If that’s the case then there is nothing complicated about that.
Have a look here.

Okay, it’s all starting to come together now. So basically I just need to follow the instructions for installing multiple blogs, then when i’m ready to make the switch delete the existing blog and follow the instructions for moving my new blog. Is that right?
