blog pages by month rather than limit

Is there a way to modify the way wordpress displays/limits the number of posts on at anyone time.

The default setting is by a limit of x number. Can this be modified to limit by month? I want my blog front page to always display the current months posts

If so can the previous and next then take that modification in to account when viewing previous months posts?
