We use our WP installation as a CMS, and have some posts that end with up similar content, but are accessible to different users. As a consequence of this sometimes the same video is included in multiple posts. It would be swell if the plug-in could detect this condition (perhaps a hash of the thumbnail), and reuse the thumbnail that is already in the library. (Possibly “easier” though it could fail if video URIs are not normalized, is to store the video URI as an extra field for the media library entry, and check if any entries have a URI matching the video for the current/new post)

I could see this possibly becoming a feature, but I’d have to consider a few possible issues like the fact that an image can only be attached to one post which could be a pain for some users. Is this a problem that happens for you often, and is your main concern the extra data/files or the media library getting cluttered?

I definitely plan on storing the video data with the thumbnail eventually because I’d like to offer the ability to update thumbnails if they change or a service were to update their API with better quality thumbnails.

Yeah, the single attachment limits in WP is definitely a bit of an oversight and a little annoying. We get a duplicate or two every few weeks. The cluttered media library is my main concern, though having duplicate files in the backup also perturbs me a tad.
