I’m running WordPress 2.3 on a few blogs hosted by Bluehost. Bluehost has the Fantastico version of WordPress, but mine was manually installed and manually updated since a few versions ago.

When I upgraded to 2.3 a few days after it first came out, it *seemed* to have gone fine…unless I didn’t notice the problem before. Now I just noticed that all my blogs on different domains have various greater than and less than signs throughout all the entries. If you look at http://www.ramenramenramen.net or http://www.betteroffed.com you can see the < and >’s at the beginning and end of each entry.

Since Bluehost doesn’t support WordPress unless it’s installed via Fantastico, they suggested I try asking for help here.

Does anyone have any idea what’s causing the symbols to appear and how I can get rid of them?

  • Greater Than and Less Than yes, but in this usage they are known as opening and closing tags.

Can you actually see them in the code in your theme directory files – index.php and single.php?

Try to look for two together << or >> and remove one at a time. There should only be or four that have doubled up on each index.php and single.php file.

Thanks shadow! That wasn’t it, as my blogs all use different themes and they were working before. But that lead me to check out plugins, which I should’ve done first. I’ve tracked it down to some weirdness with the Gregarious plugin. I’ll ask over on that forum instead.

Just to be complete, the problem/fix *is* related to the Gregarious plugin and dealt with here.

For anyone that has a WordPress blog hosted by Bluehost, they’re currently busy switching over to PHP 5 and doing away with PHP 4 altogether and as of this post, they have not notified anyone of this in any way shape or form.

This is going to break a large portion of WP blogs hosted by Bluehost due to plugins that will only run on PHP 4 plus numerous “php memory limit exhausted” errors.

As a “recommended” provider by WordPress, and with all the issues, WordPress should reevaluate this status.

    hi edjusted,

i know this thread is resolved. Just a few point here if you are using bluehost for wordpress hosting.

you can manually upload wordpress to ftp server and install from there. I done this for my site hosted with bluehost, http://www.bluehostreview.org/
I also installed the WPAU, wordpress automatic upgrade, that allow me to upgrade wordpress from the plugin page. Thus, there is no need to go through fantastico or reupload again. 🙂
