    I have subscribe2 installed on my blog (WP 3.5). Spammers are using it to try to subscribe users to my blog (mostly from yahoo.de or .gmx email addresses) – since the new year I have had over 7000 failed attempts to subscribe to my blog. I don’t understand why spammers want to do this (is there something malicious, or is it just a “nusiance”?), and I don’t know how to stop it. It’s becoming a problem because the levels of traffic are such that my bandwith allowance is being used up. Any information and advice would be much appreciated.

  • @zoetoft,

    I’d recommend installing Bad Behaviour plugin. You can also stop public subscriber sign ups from these domains by adding the domain name to the barred list in Subscribe2->Settings under the Miscellaneous Tab.

    If these are Registered User sign up, try the Stop Spammer Registrations Plugin.

    Thanks @mattyrob

    So the problem in more detail is that there are lots of fake attempts to register for the email subscription – I see some evidence in my inbox when the invitiation to confirm subscription bounces, but clearly in some cases (lots, actually) it doesn’t bounce (it looks like the spammer is using a mixture of genuine email addresses and fake email addresses, I’m guessing automatically generated). So I’m guessing the Stop Spammer Registrations Plugin in the one that might target this?

    Anyway, I’ve installed both your suggestions – hopefully this won’t result in too many genuine subscribers being unable to subscribe.

    @zoetoft,

    Both of those plugins are designed to stop automated actions on your site without blocking genuine human attempts to interact with your site. In my experience both of them work very well.

    Or even, with the correct spelling, response. 😉

    @zoetoft,

    Excellent news 🙂

    I got an unusual string instead of e-mail from my Subscribe2. It looks like this: aaliyahaaronabbieabbyabdulabelabigailabrahamadaadalbertoadamadan. I got 32 all the same.
    The problem is that I cannot delete this unconfirmed “subscriber”. How do I get rid of those?
    Thx

    @gazaark,

    You can delete these subscribers in Subscribe2->Subscribers unless they are Registered Users within WordPress vin that case you delete them at Users-> All Users.

    I cannot delete them from Subscribe2->Subscribers: I check them, select Delete, Apply and they dont go away! And they are not registered users.
    How could they subscribe in the first place with no e-mail address? just a string
    (aaliyahaaronabbieabbyabdulabelabigailabrahamadaadalbertoadamadan). And they did it 32 times….

    @gazaark,

    You’ll have to delete them by logging into the Database using PHPMyAdmin then. Entered email addresses are check that they are valid emails so I have no idea how these strings got into your database.
