    [mod: http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#Choose_A_Good_Topic_Title ]

Bought domain at iPage, bought hosting at iPage. Clicked on wordpress and it installed pretty automatically. There are 3 pages right now, I see how to add pages and I even added a photo and changed some text to bold. If I go to makaylasstreetjam.com I get this crazy website that I have no idea what it is, although it has my title, and this error message “This site is under development This page indicates the webmaster has not uploaded a website to the server. For information on how to build or upload a site, please visit your web hosting company’s site.”

If I type in any of the other two pages, using a backslash, makaylasstreetjam.com/test or makaylastreetjam.com/registration, I get the pages I’ve been working on. From either of these pages i can go to the other, but if I click on Photos (static front page) I get that weird website with the error message.

What on earth is going on? I’ve ben reading for hours!!! Please help. Thanks!
    Kay

  • This is a common issue when you start off with a new hosting account.

The way that the web server works is that it has a range of files that it checks when you hit the main domain, or a directory. In most cases it tries the files in this order:

    1. index.html
    2. index.htm
    3. index.php

For your site, this means that you have the index.php file set up from your WordPress site, but there’s also a “default” index.html file there as well that your hosting company puts in as a placeholder for your site. Because that’s first in the check order, that holding page is what’s shown first.

It’s pretty easy to get rid if this. Somewhere on your hosting control panel there should be a file manager. If you click into that you’ll be able to see the files that are set up in your site. You might have to click into a folder called something like ‘public_html’, ‘httpdocs’, ‘www’ or something similar. When you’re in the right area, you’ll see a list of files with one called ‘index.php’ and one called either ‘index.htm’ or ‘index.html’ What you need to do is delete the one that’s ‘index.html’ or ‘index.htm’ and leave only the ‘index.php’ file.

If that’s hard to find you can always ask your hosting comapny if they can delete the file for you. They most likely will if they’re a decent company.

Previously Mentioned there are several people with these kinds of issues. Contact your service provider

I contacted iPage and he fixed the problem immediately. Thank you for your post catacuastic, he said he didn’t have to spend time hunting down the problem…went right to it and fixed it. Now the site works and I can begin creating the site. It was very frustrating, because I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks again!!!
