Originally, my wordpress was setup in a certain folder (/cgi/wp) instead of the root and an index.htm file was created redirecting visitors to the blog in the other folder. My host did this automatically, and I don’t like it.

I followed the instructions on here, moving the files over to a new directory (/wordpress), clicking the instructions under “general” on my dashboard, and then copying the “index.php” file to my root directory.

It also said to copy the .htaccess file, but no such file exists, even when I say to view “all” files. It is not working! There also aren’t any files that start with “web” or whatever that other file it says might be in place of the .htaccess.

So, now when you try to go to the website it just shows a list of files that are in the index (like when you don’t have an index.htm file set up).

    Please help!!!!!!

I have a temp index.htm file made which just says it’s down

From what I can see, it’s not possible to run an index.php file from the root folder – which is probably why your hosts ran WordPress from /cgi. I’ve seen this kind of approach used on sites offering combined PHP/ASP hosting.

Tbh, I think you need to reverse all of your steps and move WordPress back to its original position. Or contact your hosts for assistance.

I’m thinking I need to just reinstall wordpress from scratch :-/ But i don’t know how to do that and import all of my posts and images and everything

Have you asked your hosts if they can restore your site?

Well, it’s not allowing php right now but I upgraded my account to use php and wordpress, it’s currently pending. So, that isn’t the issue.

    it’s currently pending

If it’s pending, that suggests that this has not been implemented yet. So again, checking back with your hosts about this would be a good idea before you try anything else.

Well, the problem is that their customer support is horriffic! I still have a pending ticket from 6 months ago.

And when I have talked with them on the phone, it’s a nightmare. It’s like talking to a robot and it just goes nowhere!

But, regardless, does anyone know why the .htaccess file isn’t there???

If this is a windows server, it won’t use .htaccess files at all.

It isn’t in the files that I manually upgraded with either. So, I guess the instructions I used to move my site were out of date. Are there up to date instructions out there?

    (@hoodleehoo)

So, for moving my wordpress to a root directory this is all I have to do?

    1. move all the files from the wordpress directory to the folder you want to keep it at.

    2. In the general settings in the dashboard change the files URL and the index URL.

    3. Copy just the file index.php into the root directory

And that’s it? It should work?

If the instructions you used were from http://codex.wordpress.org then they’ll be up-to-date. The issue is that this may be an unusual server setup and you really do need to get the hosts involved,

But the instructions say that .htaccess needs to be copied, but you are saying no such file exists. Something is wrong here.
