• I downloaded the new version and updated the plugins with the effect that my sidebar disappeared and a fatal error warning came up about the sidebar referring to the them (2010).
this is awful. I am not an expert. all my advertising is referring to a link on the site. What can I do?

    1. yes, I updated it to the most recent version, as suggested.
    2. the error warning is as follows – on ALL pages including the contact page:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function dynamic_sidebar() in /www/sites/3b6/8d1/www.qimoving.co.uk/web/wp-content/themes/twentyten/sidebar.php on line 20

    3. On the sidebar, which was replaced by the error notice, there were two sticky links to other pages on my site.

    4. I read your trouble shooting link and deactivated ALL the plugins – with to no effect to the error notice. I have now activated the one for the contact page to be reachable.

    5. I don’t know what mu-plugins are and I don’t know what or where browser caches are

    6. I have had a look at the themes:

A: When I go to edit my themes, it says beneeth 2011, which I think I have:

“There is a new version of Twenty Eleven available. View version 1.5 details or update now.”

This comes with a warning that customised items may be lost, so I did not, but looked at the preview

The Preview changes the welcome page unrecognisably, leaves out the original error in the side bar and brings up instead this one at the bottom of the page the following:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_active_sidebar() in
    /www/sites/3b6/8d1/www.qimoving.co.uk/web/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/sidebar-footer.php on line 17

All other pages are not affected by the preview and still show the old layout with error as first quoted.

B: Preview for 2012 theme brings up this warning:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_active_sidebar()
    in /www/sites/3b6/8d1/www.qimoving.co.uk/web/wp-content/themes/twentytwelve/functions.php on line 421

C: Theme 2010 will not load a preview at all – although it is quoted in the error message and I believe that it was use.

    7. Playing with the page attributes:

With the default setting, the error comes up in the sidebar with the wording first quoted.
But with the setting One column / not sidebar, a different error wording comes up at the bottom of the pages saying: Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_active_sidebar() in /www/sites/3b6/8d1/www.qimoving.co.uk/web/wp-content/themes/twentyten/sidebar-footer.php on line 17

I had some free help with setting up the appearance of the site (the picture banner and some other things) so I am not in the know how it was done. That support is now not available to me, sadly. So I cannot help you – or myself- here.

What I have written up so far, is the best I could do, I am afraid. Most of the things suggested to do, I don’t understand. Maybe you have a bright idea.

    Thanks

It is now the 9th of April. As you can see from the above, I tried everythsince and my sidebar is still off and the fatal error still stick on it instead.

am I asking the wrong people here? If so, who should I rather ask for help?

    I would appreciate some input

    Thanks

Sorry your thread did not get answered – these are all volunteer forums, so that happens sometimes :/ . In another thread you said:

I don't dare updating twentyten to the latest version, (which might help!?) because I am worried instead of helping it will just cause more havock.

Is that correct that you have old versions of the themes? That may be the problem.

But did you make changes to the theme files on your site?

There may be something wrong with your core files of WordPress. is_active_sidebar happens to be a core function, it is not specific to your themes. The themes just happen to use the function. If there is an error stating the function is missing, then it is missing from your core files.

How did you upgrade WordPress? Manually or via the “Upgrade” button in the admin area?
