• I work at a community college and I’m looking around for ways to help the Art Department create a WordPress blog. None of us have a lick of experience at this. Here’s what I know so far:
I want to be able to make/maintain on our blog from my desktop at work.
I want to avoid using the college server.

So that means I have to find a host, yes? Does a host let me keep our server out of the loop? When a site like BlueHost touts “1 click installation”, does that refer to installing software on the college server? Is that necessary if our server isn’t hosting the blog?

WordPress.com seems to say that I can do everything from their site, but I think that art faculty will eventually want more bells and whistles than WordPress.com supports.

Your thoughts and your patience much appreciated.

WordPress.com seems to say that I can do everything from their site, but I think that art faculty will eventually want more bells and whistles than WordPress.com supports.

This may sound odd coming from someone on the WordPress.ORG site but I recommend you go with either WordPress.COM or another managed WordPress solution.

The reason is this: you can get your feet wet as well as the Art Department faculty for a low cost of entry. Meaning it’s quick to setup and you get most of (if not all) the functionality without having to manage a server. That’s a good first start and if your community college can support a server (via a hosting company) then you can always migrate to a self-hosted WordPress.ORG installation.

Edit: Note that I’m not discussing different hosting services. That would cause this topic to be shutdown in a quick minute as those get spammy very quickly.

Additionally, to clarify, reference to “1-click installation” means installing WordPress software on an account that you set up (and pay for) on that host’s server. Doesn’t have anything to do with your college’s server.

    Thanks, guys!
I think I can relay this to the art department with a bit more confidence now.

    This newbie is so grateful!
