Controlling Post Preview Text

I want to be able to control the preview text that viewers see in the front page column view before they click on a post. Currently the theme just grabs as much of the text that it can from the post to create the preview text and the result is often clunky.

Please tell me how I can control the snippet of text that appears as a preview under the featured image in the 2 column view.
