popular posts widget

The response to the question at http://webtuts.pl/themes/delicacy-en/#comment-3005 talks about how it would be necessary to code a “most popular” or “most commented” widget, but couldn’t a plugin like the one at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/popularity-posts-widget/ provide this functionality? Is there a compatibility issue?
