Everything I was looking for in testimonials plugin. Donation coming once I get paid for the job.

btw one update to the shortcode documentation if you are using a hierarchy in your categories. The shortcode to exactly specify a sub-category would then be:

[testimonialswidget_list category=”parent-category/sub-category”]
