Backend blog issues

Hey! I’ve taken over a blog that’s up and running, but was setup by a contractor. I have the FTP information, but am finding I’m a little rusty in my backend skills. Since I didn’t build the blog from scratch, I’m a little hesitant to step into someone else’s playground. Is there a guide that I might benefit from reading? Thank you in advance.
